A recent family session at Gillson Park Beach in Wilmette was the perfect reminder of why this location continues to be one of my absolute favorites for family photography in the Chicago area. This beautiful family brought their four children and two dogs, and the session was filled with a wonderful mix of relaxed posing and candid moments — running along the shoreline, laughing together, and enjoying a true evening by the water.

Why Gillson’s Park Beach in Wilmette Is One of My Favorite Chicago Photo Locations for Family Beach Photography

Over the years, I’ve photographed families at many different beaches throughout the Chicago area, but Gillson Park Beach in Wilmette consistently stands out. One of the biggest reasons is the variety it offers.

While the beach itself is clean, open, and beautiful, there is also a nearby grassy park area that allows for a completely different look within the same session. This means we’re not limited to just sand and water — we can create a full, varied gallery with soft greenery, open space, and more traditional family portraits as well.

Lake Michigan Sunset Family Beach Photography (What Most People Get Wrong)

One of the most common misconceptions about photographing along Lake Michigan is the idea of sunset over the water.

In Chicago, the sun does not actually set over the lake. Instead, achieving that warm, glowing “sunset” look is all about understanding light direction and working at the right angles. Careful positioning helps capture the best available light and create that soft, golden feel families love.

In addition, subtle post-production techniques can enhance warmth and highlight natural light when needed, while still keeping everything looking realistic and timeless.

How We Create Clean, Uncrowded Beach Portraits

Another question I often hear is how beach sessions can look so clean and free of distractions.

My preferred area to photograph at Gillson Park Beach in Wilmette is near the dog beach section. It’s not only perfect for families bringing pets, but it also tends to be less crowded and more visually open, which allows for cleaner compositions.

When needed, any distracting background elements or people can also be carefully removed in post-processing to maintain a polished final gallery.

Parking, Permits & What to Expect at Gilson Park Beach in Wilmette

The only real downside to this location is parking and access.

A permit or beach fee is required to enter Gillson Park Beach in Wilmette, so it is not a free Chicago beach like some others in the area. There can also be a bit of a walk if you’re not parking close by.

That said, I personally don’t mind it at all — the setting is so beautiful and peaceful that it’s always worth it. For me, it’s part of what makes the experience special.

How Family Beach Photography is Different than Other Locations

Beach photography does require a different level of planning and experience compared to other outdoor locations.

Wind, changing light, reflections off the water, and fast-moving children and pets all come into play. Years of working in these environments have taught me how to anticipate those conditions and use them creatively rather than fight against them — resulting in images that feel natural, relaxed, and full of life.

Sessions like this one are a reminder that the best family photographs aren’t about perfection — they’re about connection.
