I recommend reserving your one-year birthday session about two to three months before your child’s birthday. This gives plenty of time to plan a custom set, coordinate colors and styling, and make sure your session takes place before birthday celebrations begin.

If you hope to display portraits at your child’s birthday party or include them on invitations, scheduling the session four to six weeks before the big day usually allows enough time for editing and ordering artwork.

Starting with Family Portraits (Dog Included!)

We began Archie’s session in our cozy natural-light studio with timeless family portraits. Before the cake smash, we photographed Archie with his parents—and of course, their sweet family dog.

Including parents and siblings (even the four-legged ones!) helps tell the complete story of this season of life. While babies are the stars of these sessions, the family connections captured during this time often become the most treasured images of all. Some of my favorite portraits from the session were of Archie interacting with the family dog. Their sweet bond created genuine moments that simply can’t be staged.

A Custom Cake Smash Designed Just for Archie

After family portraits, it was time for the main event—the cake smash. Every one-year birthday session I create is customized for each family. Archie’s parents wanted something timeless that reflected their style, so we designed a completely unique set just for him. From the backdrop and props to the coordinating cake, every detail was carefully planned before they arrived.

Archie had so much fun exploring his cake. We captured everything from curious first touches to frosting-covered fingers and joyful smiles. Every baby reacts differently during a cake smash, and that’s what makes these sessions so much fun. Whether they dive right in or cautiously investigate every bite, their authentic reactions always create unforgettable photographs.

A Personalized Aviation-Themed Set

To make Archie’s one-year birthday session even more meaningful, we surprised his family with a second aviation-themed set inspired by his dad’s career in the aviation industry.

Complete with vintage-style airplanes, clouds, and carefully selected props, the set celebrated an important part of their family’s story while creating portraits that were completely unique to them.
